Press Release: Lancashire TUC opposes BNP conference in Blackpool

The Lancashire Association of Trade Union Councils (LATUC) represents the national TUC in Lancashire and brings together thousands of trade unionists. At the LATUC General Council meeting in Preston on Saturday, delegates expressed their commitment to stop the BNP holding their annual conference in Blackpool in November. The LATUC deplores the policies of the BNP and all racist and fascist organisation, which are incompatible with the principles of the trade union movement.

Following the LATUC General Council meeting, Peter Billington, LATUC Secretary, said:

"We want to remind any hotel or other venue thinking of giving the BNP a meeting place that these people are violent and dangerous thugs. Two BNP members were remanded in custody in Burnley last week on charges of possessing chemical substances under the Explosive Substances Act. They will appear in Burnley Crown Court on the 23 October. One of the men, Robert Cottage, was a BNP candidate in the local council elections in May 2006 in Nelson, Lancashire. This shows that the BNP is not a normal political party but an organisation made up of dangerous people who are prepared to use bombs to get their way. Anyone thinking of giving the BNP facilities for its conference should know that these are the kind of people they are associating with."
